About Tik Tok

Most of the users of this app are teenagers due to the popularity of the trends among their age group. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company Bytedance founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming. The app was initially released in 2018 and combined with musical.ly. TikTok is available for iOS and Android systems with over 30 language availabilities. TikTok quickly moved to the top with articles stating it is the 7th most downloaded application of this decade. TikTok falls under the Chinese restriction of censorship and causes some national security concerns.

Truth Behind TikTok Ban

President Donald Trump along with his administration grew concerned due to their belief that the Chinese government can gain access to the user’s information that resides in the United States, due to the Chinese government’s ability to gain information of companies under their laws. TikTok continuously denied the allegations of providing information of users to the Chinese government and the owner Zhang Yimming intends on selling the app to a US company or corporation to prevent this national concern which boiled up overtime. The president was not specific about the steps he is planning on pursuing to achieve the ban of this app, but it has caused a mass trend of users agreeing and others disagreeing. The White House has brought situations like this multiple times with Chinese products or devices. TikTok came out with a statement that the data collected is stored in the United States but the problem is where the company resides and how the country’s law applies to that company that might pose a threat to the United States. TikTok is moving forward to brand itself as an American type of brand to lower the national concerns. They offered to sell TikTok to various American companies such as Microsoft to buy 30 percent of the company and even offered to sell a portion of TikTok to investors which the President along with his administration prevented. Trump wants to purchase 100 percent of TikTok without any negotiation. The President feels the app is unsafe even if branded as American due to its origins and does not want any strings attached as far as an information leak of the United States residents using this application. The app has been said to be able to operate and gather information from a user’s phone even if the app is not in use which is concerning to many users which therefore establishes the fact that its unsafe especially for teenagers who are the majority of the users of this application.
