Early Life

Bashar Barakah Jackson also is known as Pop Smoke was born on July 20, 1999, and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn. He was raised by a Jamaican mother and a Panamanian father who were always in the picture, but he had a couple of problems with the law. Pop smoke first run-in with the law was eighth grade when he brought a gun to school causing him to be expelled and put on two years house arrest for possession of a firearm. Growing up he was given the nickname “poppa” by his grandmother and “smoke oh guap” by friends which later got merged into his rapping name Pop Smoke. He grew up listening to artists such as 50 Cent, Dmx, Jadakiss, and Lloyd Banks. His main aspiration in life was to become a businessman with the hopes of opening his businesses. He received a scholarship at Rocktop Academy for basketball, but he cut that short to pursue other options.

Career of Pop Smoke

Pop Smoke was known as a good friend of New York artist Jay Gwuapo and while hanging out with him during his studio session he decided to freestyle on a drill beat initially starting his music career. He dropped his single MPR and Flexin which drew attention to him creating a buzz in New York because of his rapping style and his voice. He later made a collab with 808Melo, a British drill producer to create his “Meet the Woo” mixtape which leads to his hit song “Welcome to the Party” from his Meet the Woo mixtape attracting more than 8 million views on YouTube and different platforms in 2 months. The song was the spark of his career leading to remixes with Nicki Minaj and YG. The mixtape included popular songs such as Dior, Scenario, Hawk Em, and PTSD. He collaborated with other artists such as Lil Tjay on the track “War” and “Gatti” with Travis Scott and the JackBoys on the JackBoys album in 2019. Pop Smoke was signed to Victor Victor/Republic records In February 2020, he released his Meet the Woo 2 mixtape which featured A Boogie with da Hoodie, Lil Tjay, Quavo, Fivio foreign along with Nav, Gunna and PnB Rock on his deluxe edition released five days after. Pop Smoke’s net worth was $700,000 with his music reaching more than six million on different platforms along with more than a million followers on Instagram. His YouTube had more than 300 thousand subscribers along with his SoundCloud at more than 60 thousand followers. Unfortunately, we received alarming news that Pop Smoke has been shot and killed during a home invasion at his Hollywood Hills home on February 19, 2020. Police arrived at the scene and found Pop Smoke with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical center where he was pronounced dead with the cause of death being a gunshot wound to his torso. After his death, a public mural was made to honor his legacy with over a thousand people attending his funeral. Famous rapper 50 Cent called out Pop Smoke’s team to help produce his album after his death with the promise to taking Pop Smoke’s mother to an award show. “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon” was released on July 3, 2020, with an estimate of 225 million streams and earning its place as number 7 on the Billboard 200. Rest in Peace Pop Smoke and his legacy lives on.
